Opto-Electronics for Disposable Turbine

The Cortex Opto-electronics for use with a disposable turbine, also known as a flow sensor, is used to measure the volume flow during a CPET test. The disposable turbine option was established in 2019 whilst we were in a pandemic, as an option to carry out CPET testing with minimal risk. This option can give users a faster turnaround time for back-to-back testing, and can be a more cost-effective solution depending on the user’s requirements.

Calibration

The disposable turbine is already calibrated for you. The Cortex CPET software automatically detects the using of the disposable turbine, the calibration can be executed, but is not applied here.

Disposal of the Turbine

Once you have completed your CPET test, the disposable turbine can be disposed off in your regular mixed waste. They are only intended for single use, so they must not be reused.

Take special care when disposing the turbine when used on a highly infected patient.

Important

To ensure accurate measurements you must update the Cortex CPET device to the current firmware (V1.03.14 or above) before using the flow sensor with disposable turbine for the first time (see hardware manual).

Opto-Electronics for Reusable Turbine

The Cortex flow sensor for a Reusable turbine is used to measure the volume flow during a CPET test. This option allows user to simply clean and disinfect the turbine between each use rather than having to dispose of it.

Calibration

Unlike the disposable option, the reusable turbine causes the system to need a calibration for every test.  Your Cortex system will register that you are using a reusable turbine and prompt you to complete a calibration before each test.

Disinfection

Danger of infection

After each test, the mask, mask adapter and electronics housing must be thoroughly cleaned and then disinfected. Mask and mask adapter do not have to be separated.

Remove the opto-electronics for cleaning, if using the disposable option then discard of the turbine. With the opto-electronics aside, place the remaining parts into a sterilising solution. We recommend you do not leave the components in the solution for any longer that 5 minutes.

The system components must be cleaned as well as disinfected, otherwise encapsulation of protein residues can occur, which can lead to pathogens being transmitted.
